Very few claims are declined because an insurer is being difficult. Most are declined for reasons that were written into the policy from day one and never explained to the policyholder.
Insurance works on the principle of utmost good faith. If something material was not disclosed when the policy was taken out, whether deliberately or by oversight, the insurer can decline. Tell us everything, even the parts you think might raise the premium. A slightly higher premium is better than a worthless policy.
Most policies require notification within a set period, often 30 days and sometimes as little as 48 hours for certain classes. Report the loss to us as soon as it happens, even if you do not yet have all the documents.
Every policy has exclusions. Wear and tear, consequential loss, unoccupied premises, unlicensed drivers. One of our main jobs as your broker is to walk you through these before you sign.
A missed premium can leave you uninsured without you realising. If a payment is going to be difficult, tell us early. We can often arrange instalments rather than let a policy fall away.
